Lyoss is Burning
August 19, 2011
Another Friday, another old army… the last one in fact.
So, this time I bring you the Retribution of Scyrah, LiB edition. This was my army (for MkII) prior to beginning this blog.
When MkII hit, I decided it was time for a change, and begun off loading my Khador. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to play, but I wanted something different, and I wanted to do it well… oh, how far I fell
I was intrigued by the RoS Mage Hunter (Garryth) ‘fluff’, and liked the idea of using my NQM Alternative pEiryss figure, so after a bit of quick consideration picked up a small army.
I started with Rahn, focusing solely on his “Charge of the Battlemages” theme army; and wrote a pretty good discussion article on it called Mittens for Kittens. And I picked up Vyros as a second caster (liking the idea of RoS without magehunters).
It proved to be quite a fun and new army to play, and with a little encouragement I set up Lyoss is Burning, the best RoS blog out there. But I couldn’t hold off my pewter addiction and had to pick up the stuff for every theme list.
With such a quickly growing army, and a need to get fully painted, I gave up on my high quality paint job dream – I did a cool test model or two, but getting the colours right proved too difficult; instead going for a very simple scheme and embarking on an attempt to dip the army on a large scale… something I feel came out awesomely!
In the end though, the army succumbed to a multitude of things. After the birth of my second child I felt gaming was a bit too big (and expensive) a part of my life… and was disappointed in myself for having another foolishly large force. While cool and different I was also unimpressed with what had originally been meant to be an expertly painted army. Though it did look snazy:
And the army was quickly unfun to play. I found the options uninspiring, and play came down to an easy win, playing with my opponent, or just throwing the game away. Simply, I guess, the faction was just to straightforward and direct for me – I need convolution and over specialisation.
So that was that.
Red and Angry

Another Friday, another old army.
This time, KHADOR!
This was my main army through MkI, and I enjoyed it very much. I spent forever deciding on a paint scheme, yo-yoing between red, white and green before settling on a Fifth Border Legion scheme (taken from NQM#10).
The army became expansive including the max obtainable FA of every faction model playable under a single caster, a total of about 395 pts (inc. associated mercenaries).
This was it in it’s early stages.
I shied away from the common armies of the time, and commonly ran three types of lists.
- Precision Bombards – roughly pVlad, Behemoth, 3 Destroyers, 2 Greylord Ternions.
This was my favourite list, and fit well in what is now approximately a 50pt list. It’s not something I would use now as it made decisive use of specific MkI rules: S&P used to be 3 focus, leaving 4 for allocation; unit leaders weren’t replaced automatically (so killing a unit leader nerfed a unit heavily); Greylord Blizzards had a speed debuff, which could auto-fail charges and slams; Unit Coherency wasn’t as open.
All up the list used aiming, arcing fire, S&P and boosts to remove key enemy models during the first two turns (unit leaders, solos, etc), alongside an AOE barrage; Greylord sprays would hose down any incoming units, while Blizzard would deny charges and LoS; feat allowing a complete reposition, or an increased threat range for a determined range strike at the enemy caster – I was a surgeon with a shotgun! - MoW – roughly Irusk, 4 units of Shocktroopers, 2 units of Demo Corps, 2 Kovniks, Drakhun.
Remember… this is MkI, before casters took warjack points. I don’t think much needs to be said about this. - Sorscha Stationary Effects and Auto-Damage – roughly pSorscha, Kodiak, Kodiak, Destroyer, Widowmakers, Eiryss, Kell, etc.
This was the later army I was working on, smaller than the above armies at what is about 35pts nowadays. It was quite fun and seemed to be working quite well (MkII cut short development). The idea behind the list was to freeze, knockdown and all round stall the enemy – remember this was before shake effects; and deal with armour through auto damage (the Kodiak’s chain-attack used to do auto damage to each column of target jack/beast).
All up this army was awesome!
But when MkII starting coming out it became clear that the lists I loved would not properly survive the edition change; and that keeping up with my full attainable FA scheme would become unsustainable, so I decided to clear out and move on to a new faction in MkII. My Khador demo Bbox army is all that remains.
The Interdiction Of Judgement
August 5, 2011
Continuing with the my previous-army-Friday tradition, here’s something I prepared earlier.
This is my Protectorate of Menoth demo/starter army; and so is a member of my Press Ganging demo collection – a 15pt army based around a faction Battlebox, using only Prime models and painted in an official alternate scheme.
If it’s somehow not abundantly clear, the army is:
High Exemplar Kreoss
- Repenter
- Revenger
- Crusader
Choir of Menoth (Leader and 3 Grunts)
Paladin of the Order of the Wall.
And is, I think, a pretty good representation of Prime-only Menoth; you know, before all the Vassals and books and stuff
Like my Cryx Bbox, this was very much a speed job, done quickly so as to promptly accompany my Cygnar and Khador Bboxes to some demo events. They’ve been done in the Interdiction of Judgement scheme, given in NQM#22. It was a fun scheme to paint, though it looks absolutely terrible until you get to the final steps (clashing metals and pinks, etc); and is now on of my favourite schemes all round.
The only disappointment I find with this force, is peoples reaction to a purple army… really, the attitude some people have towards things is appalling. I must admit the reaction hasn’t been that bad, but considering the scheme isn’t that outlandish…
Anyway, here’s some more pictures:
